Two short films and a short animation, all from Iran, will compete at the 23rd Encounters Short Film and Animation Festival in Bristol, England.
The selected Iranian films include short animated piece ‘Pink’ directed by Mahboubeh Mohammadzaki, and two short films ‘Retouch’ by Kaveh Mazaheri, and ‘Silence’ co-directed by Farnoush Samadi and Ali Asgari.
‘Retouch’ is about a young woman whose husband dies before her eyes and she just observes the tragic scene. The film recently won a best short film award at Michael Moore’s Traverse City Film Festival, Michigan, the US.
Mohammadzaki’s latest animation ‘Pink’, also written by her, is about a woman suffering from a serious disease and her determination to overcome it.
‘Silence’, which premiered in the Short Film Official Competition at 2016 Cannes Film Festival, tells the story of a little girl, a Kurdish refugee, who refuses to translate the doctor’s words to her mother and prefers to remain silent.
A leading event in the UK, the festival is an annual meeting place for filmmakers and industry professionals, based in Bristol. Nominated filmmakers qualify for prestigious festivals including the BAFTAs, the Oscars, the European Film Awards and the Cartoon d’Or.
The 23rd edition of the festival will be held September 19-24.
