The play ‘Anna Karenina’, based on the famous novel of the same name by Russian writer Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910), will be staged at Shahrzad Theater in Tehran from August 8.

It was earlier performed at Iranshahr Theater and “due to the public reception in the final days”, director Arash Abbasi decided to re-stage it, this time at a different venue, Mehr News Agency reported.

An Iranian playwright, theater director and actor, Abbasi has modified the script, which is a free adaptation of Tolstoy’s novel. “I usually revise my texts after their first public performance is over. For ‘Anna Karenina’, I read the comments and opinions written by the audience and critics, and included some of them in the script,” he said.

It is a two-actor play in which movie and theater actress Masoumeh Rahmani and theater actor Behnam Sharafi perform.

“Character description has undergone some changes and I feel the two characters have more mature personalities now,” Abbasi, 39, added.

“The script is contemporary and reflects today’s atmosphere and conditions,” he said, adding that he has kept the main theme of the novel.

“The rest of the plot is my own doing. I have always believed that I should stage classical works of literature in a form quite different from the original. In fact, it is the idea that matters most in classical works,” the director noted.

Shahrzad Theater is located at the intersection of Neauphle-le-Chateau and Razi streets in central Tehran.
