Two prominent cultural figures will speak Monday in Tehran at a meeting on ‘Tehran a Construction Workshop: Quality of Life.’

It will be attended by Seyed Mohammad Beheshti Shirazi, head of Research Institute of Cultural Heritage and Tourism, affiliated to Iran’s Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization (ICHHTO); and Ahmad Masjed Jamei, a Tehran councilor and a former culture minister.

The latter has been playing an active role in raising public awareness about cultural issues, sustainable urban development and improving the quality of life in the city of more than 13 million people.

Disorganized and haphazard urbanization in Tehran has come under strong criticism for years by the people, economic experts and environmentalists who have valid fears that continuation of the process is harming not helping the quality of life in the capital.

Of late government officials have concurred that for all practical purposes the urbanization in most big cities is a net result of deteriorating economic conditions in the villages and small towns and say the pattern should be discontinued with effective rural development policies and programs.

The July 17 meeting is organized under the auspices of Iranian Society of Consulting Engineers, Society of Urban Engineering, as well as the research-oriented journals Andisheh-Iranshahr and Jostarhaye Shahrsazi, Honaronline reported.

Shahnaz auditorium of Iranian Artists Forum (IAF) will host the meeting. Beheshti Shirazi and Masjed Jamei will speak about urban development and standards of living.

The IAF is located at Art Garden, Iranshahr Street. The event is open to the public.
