The 7th edition of Tehran Auction will be held July 7 at Parsian Azadi Hotel and present 72 classic and modern artworks by acclaimed Iranian artists.
Tehran Auction is a national endeavor to address the increasing interest in modern and contemporary Iranian art and facilitate the acquisition of the best quality works in reliable ways.
Organizers of the event offer their experience and expertise to bring selective artworks of various genres to art lovers, according to Tandis (tandismag.com), a local magazine on visual art.
The auction will start at 7 pm. Parsian Azadi Hotel, is located at the intersection of Chamran and Yadegar highways.
Top Prices
The base prices for the artworks range from $8,000 to $930,000. The highest estimated piece is a painting from the ‘trees’ series by poet and painter Sohrab Sepehri (1928-1980), estimated at $660,000-930,000.
The second most valuable work is the sculpture ‘Poet and Cage’ by the sculptor, painter Parviz Tanavoli, 80, ($530,000-$800,000) and in third place is another oil on canvas work from the ‘tree trunks’ series ($266,000-$400,000).
The next three high-estimated works in the list belong to abstract expressionist Manouchehr Yektai, 94; mosaic artist, painter, sketch artist and fashion illustrator Monir Farmanfarmayan, 93; and painter, sculptor Hossein Zenderoudi, 80, whose works will be offered at $215,000-$320,000.
Three other pieces are estimated at $160,000-$215,000; they are by Mohammad Ghaffari, better known as Kamal-ol-Molk (1859-1940), master of Persian painting and miniatures, Mahmoud Farshchian, 87, and Farmanfarmayan.
Graphic designer and calligrapher Mohammad Ehsaee, 78, and Yektai both have one work each, estimated at $135,000-175,000.
Painter, sculptor Bahman Mohasses (1931-2010), miniature artist Mirza Agha Emami (1881-1955) and Zenderoudi all have works estimated at $105,000-$160,000. Another work from Mohasses is to be on offer for $185,000-$240,000.
Among the other prominent living artists whose works are set at less than $100,000, are painter, graphic artist, writer and film critic Aydin Aghdashlou, 76; painter and graphic designer Koorosh Shishegaran, 72; and painter Nasrollah Afjei, 82.
The auction also presents precious works by several artists who are no more, including painter, author, illustrator and journalist Parviz Kalantari (1931-2016); painter and graphic designer Ali Reza Espahbod (1951-2007); modern painter Ahmad Esfandyari (1922-2013); painter Jafar Rouhbakhsh (1938-1996); modern painter Behjat Sadr (1924-2009); self-taught sculptor Tavakol Esmaili (1923-1994) also known as Mash Esmail; contemporary painter, graphic designer and print artist Mohammad Javadipour (1920-2012); celebrated filmmaker, photographer and painter Abbas Kiarostami (1940-2016); painter and art critic Mansour Qandriz (1936-1966) and contemporary painter Hossein Kazemi (1924-1996).
Previous Editions
The previous two editions of the auction, held in May 2016 and 2015, at the same venue, generated $7.4 and $6.4 million respectively, both marking a historic moment in the history of Persian fine arts, and a boost to Iran’s economy of art.
The first of its kind in Iran, Tehran Auction was launched in 2012 as a private, independent initiative to introduce the best of Iranian art ranging from established and emerging Iranian artists to Iranian art collectors and global buyers.
It also aims to support the domestic art market as a key basis for the international market. Tehran Auction works widely with Iranian art galleries and collectors to ensure a vast and strong selection of paintings, sculptures and photographs.
Similar to last year’s edition, actor, screenwriter, director and TV presenter Hossein Pakdel will conduct the event.
