‘Anna Karenina,’ a play based on the famous novel by the same name by Russian writer Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910) is to be staged by young playwright, theater director and actor Arash Abbasi at Tehran’s Iranshahr Theater.

Abbasi, 39, is now rehearsing the play to be adapted on stage with movie and theater actress Masoumeh Rahmani and theater actor Behnam Sharafi. It will open at Kermani Hall of Iranshahr Theater on June 22, Theater Online (theateronline.ir) reported.

“The performance will be unique,” Abbasi said about the show. “My script is contemporary and reflects today’s atmosphere and conditions,” he said, adding that he has kept the main theme of the novel.

“The rest of the plot is my own doing. I’ve always believed that I should stage classical works of literature in a form quite different from the original. In fact, it is the idea that matters most in classical works.”

Decor and costumes are also designed by him.

The theater is located next to Iranian Artists Forum on Iranshahr Street.
