Leev Theater Group, led by actor and theater director Hassan Majooni, will stage ‘Three Sisters,’ a play written in 1900 by Russian writer and playwright Anton Chekhov (1860-1904) in spring.
Rehearsals have started, and the play is planned to be staged in April-May at Tehran’s Paliz Theater, Mehr News Agency reported.
Chekhov’s classic play, first produced in 1901, tells the story of a family living unhappily in a provincial Russian town. The siblings are Olga, an unmarried teacher; Masha, who is married but does not act accordingly; and Irina, who longs to go to Moscow to find her true love.
The sisters dote on their brother Andrei, who has high hopes for an academic career at the beginning of the play but soon settles into marriage and fatherhood with an overbearing village girl named Natasha.
Over the course of four acts, the family members interact with various friends, visitors and servants and experience passion and heartbreak, all the while pining for that elusive trip to Moscow, says an introduction to the play on Broadway.Com.
“The script has undergone minimal changes but the number of actors is less,” said Majooni, 48.
Majooni has a part in the play. Other cast members are Mehdi Bajestani, Pouria Rahimi Sam, Behafarid Ghafarian, Ava Sharifi, Fariba Jedikar, Hossein Hosseinian, Faraz Sarabi, Hossein Omidi, Anahita Dargahi, Farzaneh Meydani, Milad Shajareh and Siavash Naeeni.
Dramaturgy is by theater director, playwright and actor Mehdi Chakeri, 30. Costumes are designed by Neda Nasr, and lighting by Saba Kasmaee.
Majooni had staged the play earlier in 2010. Presently, he is performing in an adaptation of Shakespeare’s ‘King Lear,’ directed by Mohammad Aqebati, 42, which is presently on stage at Iranshahr Theater.
