'The Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them' sequel will star Johnny Depp as the infamous dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald. Director David Yates has confirmed that the actor, famed for his quirky characterizations, was an ideal fit.

The movie is based on a book of the same name written by British author J. K. Rowling (under the pseudonym of the fictitious author Newt Scamander) about the magical creatures in the Harry Potter universe.

"Johnny Depp is a real artist," Yates said. "He has created several characters who have really resonated in our popular culture. He is a really brilliant actor. We were excited about seeing what he would do with this character. He is fearless; he is imaginative; he is ambitious. We thought he would do something fun and special. So we went for him, purely on that selfish basis. We do not care if he is famous or not. We just know he is interesting," gamesradar.com reported.

Grindelwald is both the villainous counterpart and childhood crush of Albus Dumbledore, another famous personage in the Harry Potter stories who was recently confirmed for an appearance in the Fantastic Beasts sequel. Grindelwald was the second most powerful dark wizard ever, right after Voldemort.

Directed by Yates and starring Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Colin Farrell, Samantha Morton, Jon Voight, and Ezra Miller, the film is scheduled to hit UK and US cinemas on November 18. Depp is also set to appear in a cameo role in the first film.
