Whether it is scrolling through Instagram, popping on a pair of headphones and turning up the music or burying oneself in a good book, everyone has their way of passing the time on public transport.
But there is nothing like the thudding realization you have left your trusty train companion at home - which is where France's short story vending machines come in, abc.net reported.
The machines dispense short stories printed on paper - for free - with passengers able to choose a story of either one, three or five minutes in length.
Following a successful trial in the city of Grenoble last year, the machines are being rolled out in train stations across France, and more than 35 will have them by the end of the year.
They also recently arrived in the capital city, with five Paris stations now home to a machine.
SNCF, France's national railway, described the stories as "a journey before the journey" and said more than 100,000 stories had been dispensed since the initial trial.
Each of the 5,000 short stories, from children's literature to poetry, were written and submitted anonymously by members of the public.
Publishing house Short Edition designed and developed the machines. Director Christophe Sibieude told Telerama: "Our ambition is to see distributors pop up everywhere to encourage reading - and writing - and to promote our artists. The paper medium is a breath of fresh air, it is more unexpected than a smartphone screen".
The great filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola is among the machine's fans, having installed one in the cafe he owns in San Francisco.
