Iranian Plays Win in Armenian Theater Festival

Two Iranian plays were awarded in the 23rd Theatrical Lori Festival in Armenia which concluded on October 12 in Lori Province.

The plays ‘Mama Yerma’ directed by Farzin Nobarani and ‘Papa Othello’ by Sahar Jamali and Nobarani, both produced by Khallaq (creative) Theater Group, represented Iran in the competition section of the Armenian festival, the public relations of the group reported.

‘Mama Yerma’ was performed on October 12 in the city of Alaverdi and was warmly welcomed by the audience and convinced the jury to present it the festival special trophy as well as an honorary diploma.

A free adaptation of the famous play ‘Yerma’ by the Spanish dramatist Federico Garcia Lorca written in 1934, the play tells the story of a childless woman living in rural Spain.

It is slated to be staged in Tehran in February 2017 at the Iranian Artists’ Forum.

‘Papa Othello’ had three performances on October 10 and 11 in the cities of Alaverdi and Stepanavan. It was also received well by the audience and received a special mention by the jury.

Also a free adaption, the work has been taken from Shakespeare’s well-known tragedy ‘Othello’. The play encompasses different themes of racism, love, jealousy, betrayal, revenge and repentance.

Amir Farahani, Bita Azizoghli, Ava Ganji, Farzad Berahman, Abbas Alireza, Soheil Ghena’ati, Melina Qadimi and Mersedeh Afsharipur perform in the two plays.

The festival was founded in 1979 in the village of Akner, Lori region. Since then it has made a great contribution to the theatrical life of Armenia. This year various theater troupes from all over the world had performances for over a week in the cities of Alaverdi, Vanadzor, Stepanavan and Spitak in Lori region as well as Noyemberyan city of Tavoush region.
