Ahmad Kiarostami received the Asian Filmmaker of the Year Award on behalf of his father, the late Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami, who died in July at age 76, at the opening ceremony of the 21st Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) on Thursday, October 6.

The award is presented to Asian cineastes or organizations that have shown the most outstanding contribution to developing the Asian film industry and culture.

The festival has also dedicated a section to introduce Kiarostami’s major works. The Special Programs in Focus section screens nine films he directed plus a documentary on his life made by his longtime friend and collaborator Seifollah Samadian, ISNA reported.

Additionally, an in-depth discourse about Kiarostami’s cinematic world will also be held during the ‘Asian Writer Research Forum’ hosted by the BIFF and Pusan National University’s film institute.

Kiarostami was one of the most influential directors in the world. He participated in the BIFF as the head of the New Currents jurors in 2005 and as Dean of Asian Film Academy (AFA) in 2010. Showing his special support and affection towards Asian film students, the late director also participated in a workshop ‘Kiarostami’s Film School’, held by the Busan Cinema Center in 2012.

In the New Currents section of the festival, the only competition section of the event, ‘Parting’ by Navid Mahmoudi, a joint production of Iran and Afghanistan, is participating. The movie has been submitted to the Oscars 2017 as Afghanistan’s nominee for the best foreign language film category.

In this section, Iranian cinematographer Mahmoud Kalari is one of the jurors.

In the non-competition Asian Cinema section also eight more Iranian movies will be shown.

The 2016 BIFF will run through October 15 in the South Korean city of Busan.
