The Iranian men’s national football 7-a-side team won the silver medal in the 2016 Summer Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro on Friday, after losing 1-2 to Ukraine in the final match.

Iran’s silver represents their best performance in the Paralympics, having won bronze at both the Beijing 2008 and London 2012 editions, varzesh3.com reported.

Ukraine remained undefeated throughout the tournament, winning its five matches, scoring 14 goals and conceding only three. They have also become the most decorated football 7-a-side team at Paralympics, with three golds and two silvers.

Also on Friday, Hamed Amiri took part in the men’s shot put contests and grabbed a silver with a throw of 11.40 meters.

Iranian athletes have so far collected 21 medals, seven golds, eight silvers and six bronzes, and Iran is 15th in the medal table.

China is atop the list with 217 medals. The UK is second with 126 and Ukraine  third with 106 medals.

The 15th edition of Paralympics will run through September 18. A total of 4,500 athletes from 159 countries are participating in the event. The Iranian squad has 111 athletes in 12 fields.
