Iranian feature film 'Malaria' will represent Iran at the 73rd Venice International Film Festival which opens on August 31.

Written and directed by Parviz Shahbazi, the film will compete in the Horizons section of the festival and will have four showings on September 8, 9 and 10, Mehr News Agency reported.

The story is about a young girl who informs her father she’s been kidnapped and asks him to bring the ransom money. In panic, her father and brothers go to look for her, unaware of the real story behind the case.

The cast includes Saghar Qanaat, Saed Soheili, Azarakhsh Farahani and Azadeh Namdari.

The Iranian company DreamLab Films has acquired the right for foreign distribution of the movie.

Founded in 1932, the Venice event is the oldest film festival in the world and one of the "Big Three" film festivals alongside the Cannes Film Festival and Berlin International Film Festival. This year's edition ends on September 10.
