Animations, Cartoon Win China Awards

Three Iranian animations and one cartoon have won awards at the first edition of International Children Animation and Comics Festival (ICACF) in China.

The short animation 'Children Under the Oak' directed by Saadat and Sara Rahimzadeh won the silver medal in the animation category of the event which was held August 6-8 in the Chinese county of Libo, Guizhou Province.

The animated film shared the medal with another work, from India 'With You', Mehr News Agency reported.

A product of Iranian animation studio Kijan Film, the animated documentary narrates the customs, traditions, clothing and ceremonies of the Kurdish people in Iran.

Last November, 'Children Under the Oak' received the award for Best Special Effects at the Asian Youth Animation and Comics Contest (AYACC) in China.

Further, two more short works from Iran 'Lady With Flower-Hair' directed by Sarah Tabibzadeh, 32, and 'Flower & Nightingale' by Mehdi Aqajani received the Outstanding Animation Award along with productions from South Korea, Russia, China and India.

'Lady with Flower-Hair' is about a woman in her forties who has grown a set of carnations on her hair. She is preoccupied with the flowers on her hair but the co-existence of two beings with absolutely nothing in common causes discomfort for one of them.

The 11-minute animation has won several international and national prizes including the second prize at the 8th Tehran International Animation Biennial 2013, Iran, Special Jury Prize and the best animation by audience at A Corto Di Donne 2013 in Italy and the best animation at Short Short Film Festival 2013 in Mexico.

'Flower & Nightingale' is about a nightingale with a singing problem. The animation has won awards in Iran, France and Chile so far.

In the comics' category, a cartoon by Sohrab Kheiri won the Excellence Award together with works by artists from Russia, Argentina, Peru, Ukraine, Mexico, Spain, Azerbaijan and Romania.

Hailing from Ardebil Province in northwest of Iran, Kheiri is a young cartoonist who has attended several national and international festivals. His works have been showcased in China, Romania and Thailand.

His winning work at the ICACF shows a young boy reading a book sitting on a poor man's shoulder (probably his father) while the man is providing the light for the boy to read by standing on a stool under a street lamp post.

Artworks and animations reflecting contents about children with various subjects using a variety of techniques participated in the first edition of the ICACF.
