An Iranian cultural exhibition opened in Rio de Janeiro on Monday concurrent with the Summer Olympic competitions underway in the Brazilian seaside city.

The exhibition was inaugurated in the presence of Iranian Ambassador to Brazil Mohammad Ali Ghanehzadeh, officials from both countries’ chambers of commerce, Iranian expatriates and arts and culture enthusiasts, Mehr News Agency reported.

“The Rio Olympics has given us the chance to display a small portion of Iranian arts and beauty to the public,” Ghanehzadeh said, describing Iran as the land of intellectuals, poets and celebrated literary figures such as Avicenna, Ferdowsi, Hafez, Khayyam, and hundreds of others who played a significant role in the formation and development of science and civilization in the world.

The exhibition displays a diverse collection of handicrafts, Persian rugs, pictorial carpets, photographs and brochures containing information about Iran’s tourist attractions.

Organized by the Iranian mission in Brazil, the exhibition will run through August 31.
