Muggles and wizards alike have united worldwide for the release of the latest book in the hit Harry Potter franchise.

However, people wanting to get their hands on the book may have to wait, with many bookstores reporting it's already sold out.

Dozens of children queued early at Dorothy Butler Children's Bookshop in Ponsonby, Auckland, New Zealand to be among the first in the world to own 'Harry Potter and the Cursed Child' on Sunday morning.

Many fans were excited to dress up as their favorite characters for the launch, with one young girl saying she dressed as Hermione Granger because she's "bright, smart and knows lots of spells".

The bookshop says it sold out completely within half an hour of the book going on sale.

The book was released globally at 11:01am (NZT) on July 31 - the date of the titular wizard's birthday - and is a published version of a two-part stage play currently running in London, newshub.co.nz reported. Set 19 years after the last venture into the wizarding world, most details of the plot are currently under wraps - but that will so on change, with the book immediately topping bestseller lists around the world.

Young fans of the series were quick to speculate on the plot, thinking the Cursed Child may be referring to Harry's son, Albus.

The release of the book comes ahead of the release of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, a Harry Potter spinoff film also written by J.K Rowling and set for release in November.
