A play written by Saghar Khaje Amiri and directed by Pouran Moradi, based on an old folk tale ‘Chelgis and Hassan the Bald’ will go on stage at the Art Bureau’s Mehr Hall in Tehran from July 14.

Amiri and Moradi are young theater directors and playwrights who got together to stage the script which is about artists who are challenged by cancer. The idea was Moradi’s, but Amiri “who is a great writer,” wrote the play which addresses patients with cancer.

The theater group has made efforts to make an avant-garde play of the old folk story, YJC reported.

“In this romantic, yet humorous melodrama, I tried to apply both traditional and modern theater techniques side by side. Therefore I believe the audience will have a different experience,” Moradi said.

Her husband Amir Karbalaizadeh, 37, a theater and cinema actor, writer and stand-up comedian, has also assisted in the play.

Moradi had staged ‘Chelgis and Hassan the Bald’ at the 24th Surah Maah National Theater festival held in October 2015 in Tehran, where she won the first prize for directing, a diploma of honor and the festival trophy.

“Compared to the festival’s performance, the current play has undergone slight changes.” At the festival, the play was also given the award for best actor, first prize for set design, and the second prize for music.

“I think the awards guarantee the play’s success,” she said.

It will run through August 10 at the venue, at the intersection of Hafez and Somayeh Streets.
