Iranian filmmaker Ida Panahandeh received the talent award at the Women in Motion program which was held at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival on May 15.

In the event, held for the second year in Cannes, Hollywood veteran actresses Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis in turn granted the award to Panahandeh and two other women, Tunisian screenwriter and film director Leyla Bouzid and Syrian director Gaya Jiji.

Panahandeh was awarded the special prize for promising futures in the ‘Un Certain Regard’ section of the 2015 Cannes for her first feature film ‘Nahid’.

The aim of the Women in Motion program is to encourage reflection on the place of women in the film industry, both on and off the screen. Its award is presented to one or several up-nd-coming talents at Cannes. The award is accompanied by financial support for an ongoing film project.

Panahandeh, 37, holds a masters degree in cinema from the University of Tehran. She made several short films, documentaries and TV movies before ‘Nahid’.
