An adapted play on Faust, the protagonist of a classic German legend, directed by Milad Akbarnejad will go on stage in fall at Iranshahr Theater Hall.

Originally written by German writer and statesman, Johann Wolfgang Goethe (1749-1832), the tragedy-drama, was published in two episodes decades apart and is considered as Goethe’s most characteristic and famous artistic creation.

Faust is the protagonist of a classic German legend. He is a scholar who is highly successful yet dissatisfied with his life, which leads him to make a pact with the devil, exchanging his soul for unlimited knowledge and worldly pleasures,

“In this story, Faust does not seek power through knowledge, but access to transcendent knowledge in comprehensible to the rational being. Here Goethe’s mysticism asserts itself clearly,” Akbarnejad said about the main idea flowing through the plot, Mehr News Agency reported.

The chief difference between the adapted and the original version is that the former takes place in the contemporary era. Four actors are in the cast.

Although today many of the classical European works may be hard for the modern reader to grasp, Faust remains a resonant parable on scientific learning and religion, passion and independence and love.

The original play was first staged in Iran by ‘Shaya’ troupe in 2011 at Tehran City Theater andin summer 2014, when it was directed by Hamidreza Naeimi.
