Globally acclaimed Iranian filmmaker Majid Majidi was conferred the Islamic Revolution Artist of the Year title on Tuesday, (April 12), at a ceremony during the Islamic Revolution Art Week (April 8-15) in Tehran.

Majidi, 56, was nominated for his blockbuster epic movie ‘Muhammad (PBUH), the Messenger of God’, chronicling the childhood of the holy Prophet of Islam from birth till the age of 13, which is on screens in the country for the past seven months and also shown at several international events.

The director, who was selected from among nine cultural figures, said, “The true artists are the martyrs of the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq war who sacrificed their lives to defend our country and what I did was the least I could do in the safe and valuable atmosphere they (the former combatants) created for us,” ISNA reported.

Organized by Howzeh Honari (Art Bureau), the other nominees of the annual event included actors Parviz Parastui and Hossein Mosafer-Astaneh; filmmakers Javad Afshar, Hadi Mohammadian and Ali Qadirian, graphic designer Danial Forrokh and authors Behnaz Zarrabi and Sara Erfani.
