Hugo’s Play at Iranshahr Theater

An adapted version of ‘Les Miserables’ (in English ‘The Miserables’), directed by Soroush Taheri will go on stage at Iranshahr Theater Hall in Tehran from April 14.
The 1862 French historical novel is considered one of the greatest works of the 19th century by poet, novelist, and dramatist of the Romantic Movement, Victor Marie Hugo (1802-1885).
Beginning in 1815 and culminating in the 1832 June Rebellion in Paris, the novel follows the lives and interactions of several characters, particularly the struggles of ex-convict Jean Valjean and his experience of redemption, Mehr News Agency reported.
‘Les Miserables’ is a 5-volume novel, the director said, adding: “In the adapted play, the focus moves from Valjean to Cosette, the little girl in the story.”
In the original story, Cosette is the illegitimate daughter of Fantine and Tholomyès. From approximately the age of three to the age of eight, she is beaten and forced to work as a drudge for the innkeepers Thénardiers. After her mother Fantine dies, Valjean ransoms Cosette from the Thénardiers and cares for her as if she were his daughter. Nuns in a Paris convent educate her. She grows up to become beautiful and falls in love with Marius Pontmercy, a young student and marries him.
In the play, most characters attempt for Cosette’s happiness. However, in the adapted play her own greed militates against her, Taheri said, adding: “This is a modern version of an ancient story in a minimal setting.”
The show was earlier performed in Mashhad, Khorasan Razavi Province, by a professional cast including Shirin Bina, Kourosh Zare’i, Maneli Hosseinpour, Pejman Jamshidi and Azadeh Samadi.
‘Les Miserables’ will run through May 4 at the hall located in south of Honar Garden, North Mousavi St., Taleqani Avenue.
