Iran and China emphasized the need for closer media cooperation, exchange of views and expanding ties at a meeting Friday in Tehran, attended by a large number of media officials from both sides, at the Espinas Hotel.

Jiang Jianguo, director of China's State Council Information Office (SCIO) said the visit of the top-ranking Chinese delegation to Iran on January 23, headed by President Xi Jinping, shows the importance of Iran for China.

Calling the media "as ambassadors of friendship that bring about cultural exchanges, he hoped the Chinese and Iranian press corps would cooperate closely in a bid to present their rich culture and tradition and defend their ideology and religion against discrimination and prejudice," IRNA reported.

Culture and Islamic Guidance Minister Ali Jannati said Iranian and Chinese media have the necessary capacity to confront western media inroads. Western media are used to imposing their own values and beliefs on others, so media cooperation between Iran and China can enhance the capacity to preserve the local culture against non-indigenous lifestyle and values, which is crucial for both countries, he said.
