Farhadi’s Film Among 2016 Top Choice

It has become routine for movie websites to usher in the new year by issuing a list of most anticipated films to be released in the coming year. Barely 10 days into 2016, Indiewire, a famous daily news site for the independent film community, has introduced 100 movies which fans and critics are eagerly waiting for, and interestingly enough Asghar Farhadi’s new film ‘The Salesman’ is 5th on the list.
The only Iranian Oscar-winner director, Farhadi is ranked 5th above many other prominent filmmakers such as German director Werner Herzog, Belgian filmmakers Dardenne brothers and American directors Jim Jarmusch, Steven Spielberg, Ang Lee and David Ayer, Cinetmag.com reported.
“ Farhadi is maybe the most exciting filmmaker to emerge in this decade. His Oscar-winning melodrama ‘A Separation’ topped our list of the best of the decade so far last year, and the France-set follow-up ‘The Past’ was terrific too. There’s been a gap of a few years since the latter, but Farhadi is lining up projects. He is apparently going to shoot a movie produced by Pedro Almodovar in Spain later this year, but he quietly shot a film back home in Iran last month. Details are thin on the ground, except that it is apparently linked to ‘Death of a Salesman’. A kind of theatrical-life drama? Or something more experimental?” Indiewire wrote about the film.
Little is known about the story except that it is about a group of theater performers rehearsing ‘Death of a Salesman’ by the eminent American playwright Arthur Miller. However, unlike what is said, the movie is still being shot in Tehran and the filming is expected to continue until late February. Therefore, its first screening can be set for Cannes Film Festival in May.
In Farhadi’s seventh film, Sahahab Hosseini, Taraneh Alidoosti, Babak Karimi and Mina Sadati are the only known faces in the cast, which also includes some new actors selected from a pool of young talent.
It is the second time Hosseini and Alidoosti are acting together in a film by Farhadi. Their previous cooperation in ‘About Elly’ (2009) resulted in one of the best films in Iran cinema both in and outside the country due to the warm welcome by the audience and positive reviews by critics.
The two popular actors have yet more films with Farhadi in their resume. Hosseini had a brilliant performance in ‘A Separation’ (2011) and Alidoosti in ‘Fireworks Wednesday’ (2006) and ‘The Beautiful City’ (2004).
Farhadi has received local and global acclaim for his works and has been quite influential in introducing Iranian modern cinema to the world.
