Well-known actress and director Niki Karimi has been selected as a member of the jury for the Valladolid International Film Festival in Spain, which opened on Saturday.

Karimi will judge the 60th edition of Europe’s oldest festival along with leading Serbian film director Goran Paskaljevic, Finnish filmmaker Pirjo Honkasalo and Spanish actor Fernando Lara.

The festival was created in 1956 as an additional feature of the Easter celebrations named the ‘Religious Film Week’. It will run through October 31.

Karimi, 44, has performed in over 25 films and bagged numerous domestic and international awards. Her performance in ‘Sara’, by Dariush Mehrjuii, won her the Best Actress Award of the San Sebastian and Nantes film festivals in 1992.

Her latest directorial work ‘Night Shift’ had its first international premier at the 31st Warsaw Film Festival last week.

‘Nahid’ by Ida Panhandeh is Iran’s only entry at the event where it will compete with 19 other movies in the competition section of feature-length films.

The film is the story of a young divorcee Nahid, who lives with her 10-year-old son. The child’s custody has been given to her by her former husband on condition that she doesn’t remarry.

The 2015 production won the special prize for promising futures in the ‘UnCertain Regard’ section of the Cannes Film Festival.
