The International Congress on Shahriar will be held at Tabriz University, East Azarbaijan Province from September 15-17, on the occasion of the noted Iranian poet’s death anniversary (Sept. 18).

The congress is organized by Iran’s Cultural Center in cooperation with the Republic of Azerbaijan’s National Academy of Sciences, IBNA reported.

A group of cultural and scientific figures from Azerbaijan will visit Iran to attend the events along with Iranian literati.

Participants in the congress will discuss different issues including reviewing religious roots in Shahriar’s poetry, moral conduct and customs and Islamic education in his works, and characteristics of Shia mysticism in his poetry.

Seyyed Mohammad-Hossein Behjat-Tabrizi (1906-1988), popularly known by his pen name Shahriar, was a legendary Iranian poet, who wrote in Turkish and Persian.

He was the first Iranian to write poetry in Azeri Turkish. His most famous poem ‘Heydar-Babaya Salam,’ published in 1954 in Azeri Turkish, is considered among the best modern poems in Iran. It has been translated into several languages and also staged as a play.

Shahriar’s forthrightness marks his works. His use of colloquial language in poetry makes his poems understandable to a cross-section of people.

His death anniversary is named ‘National Day of Poetry’ in Iran.
