Iran plays a significant role in promoting regional stability, said Chairman of Russian Mufti Councils Ravil Gaynutdin, in a meeting Thursday with visiting Iranian Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance Ali Jannati.

He warned against the threat of extremism from ‘Salafism’, ‘Wahabbism’, and Islamic State terrorists, reports IRNA.

“Terrorist and Tekifiri groups with their deviant thoughts and behavior have marred the image of Islam,’ he added.

He invited the Leader Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei and President Hassan Rouhani to take part in the inauguration ceremony of the Moscow Grand Mosque on September 23.

Cooperation between Russian Mufti Councils and the Iranian Embassy are signs of solidarity in the Islamic World, he said.

Jannati who is in Moscow to attend the Moscow International Book Fair, where Iran is the guest of honor this year, commended the role of Mufti Gaynutdin in fostering unity among Russian Sunni and Shia Muslims.

He called for expansion of cooperation with Russia especially in cultural fields and appealed for unity among regional countries to defeat the IS extremist group.
