Google has announced that it will be working with the Milwaukee Art Museum, located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the US, to offer a free, semester-long massive open online course, titled ‘Hangout With Art’ that will teach participants art history and appreciation.

According to ArtDaily, the course will aid in developing skills such as “observing (artwork) carefully, reflecting and assessing, and creating meaning,” and participants will “contribute to a worldwide understanding of art through a final project, creatively responding to a work of art of your choice.”

Participants do not need to live in the Milwaukee region, and are encouraged to sign up for the course in groups, as there are various offline activities involved. “Our virtual classroom will be the Google Cultural Institute, and our physical classrooms will be art museums or galleries located in your hometown,” said Brigid Globensky, the Barbara Brown Lee Senior Director of Education and Programs at the Milwaukee Art Museum.

“This isn’t your average art history course, Globensky cautioned. “Instead of a chronological walkthrough of art through the ages, we’ll be making personal connections to works of art and connecting artwork to unexpected careers and disciplines.”

‘Hangout With Art’ will launch February 10. Sign up to participate at the museum’s website.
