Daily gas production capacity in Khangiran Gas Field in Khorasan Razavi Province will increase by 2.5 million cubic meters in three months, managing director of the East Oil and Gas Production Company said.
“Two new wells will become operational this fall, adding 2.5 mcm per day to the field’s capacity,” the Oil Ministry news agency Shana quoted Abolhassan Mohammadi as saying.
The EOGPC, a subsidiary of Iranian Central Oil Fields Company, is in charge of supplying gas to the northeastern regions including the Khorasan region (north, south and Razavi provinces), in addition to Semnan, Golestan and Mazandaran provinces.
Terming progress of the company in repairing, production and gas injection as “satisfactory”, he said it fully met its declared production goals in the first half of the current year (began in March) and that plans for gas injection and overhaul operations are underway.
Located near the border with Turkmenistan, Khangiran Gas Field has a proven reserve of around 480 billion cubic meters. It has three reservoirs, namely Mozdouran, Shourijeh B and Shourijeh D.
Consisting of 32 wells, the field has been operating since the late 1970s. Data released by EOGPC show the field's current extraction is 17 mcm per day.
Iran is striving to increase oil and gas production despite sanctions imposed by the United States, which restricts Tehran’s ability to export and import advanced machinery.
US President Donald Trump last year pulled out of the 2015 nuclear deal, which was signed between Iran and six world powers and re-imposed sweeping sanctions.
According to latest government data, daily gas production is close to 850 million cubic meters.
One of the Biggest
Iran has one of the largest gas networks in the world. Natural gas is used in households, power plants and major industries like cement and steel. In terms of gas infrastructure, Iran ranks first in Asia and fourth in the world.
Besides domestic consumption, gas also is exported. Data from the National Iranian Gas Company shows 38.6 mcm of gas is exported to neighbors on a daily basis.
The state gas company says close to 14 billion cubic meters of gas was sold in 2018 -- up 5% compared to the year ago.
Iran (34 trillion cubic meters) and Russia (32.6 tcm) hold the largest proven gas reserves in the world, according to BP Statistical Review of World Energy.
Surveys on hydrocarbon fields show that the country's recoverable natural gas reserves have risen by 283 billion cubic meters.
