Senior Algerian Lawmaker Meets Counterpart in Tehran

Abdelhamid Si Afif, chairman of the Algerian Parliament’s foreign affairs committee, met his Iranian counterpart in Tehran on Saturday to hold talks on issues of mutual interest.

During the meeting, the senior lawmaker stressed the importance of implementing the existing agreements between Iran and Algeria, and called for cooperation in other sectors in which the two countries have high capabilities.

“The exchange of parliamentary delegations will bring Iran and Algeria closer and help realize common goals,” he was quoted as saying by IRNA.

He said Algeria is seeking to improve collaboration with Iran in trade and economic sectors.

Si Afif, chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and Emigration of the National Popular Assembly (the lower chamber of Algerian Parliament), was meeting Heshmatollah Falahatpisheh, chairman of Iran's Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Commission.

The Iranian lawmaker highlighted close cooperation between Tehran and Algiers at international assemblies, calling for further consultations to shape a shared attitude at such global conventions.

“There are great capacities in political, economic, commercial, investment and tourism sectors to expand bilateral relations. However, we are a long way from the ideal level of ties,” he said.

He underlined Iran’s advancements in science and technology, including in peaceful nuclear energy and defensive power using indigenous knowledge.

Falahatpisheh voiced hope that the memoranda of understanding signed between the two countries will be successfully implemented and problems related to banking and trade transactions would be resolved soon.
