US Talks Neither Possible, Nor Useful

Despite the United States’ repeated calls for new negotiations with Iran, engaging in talks under the present circumstances is neither possible, nor useful, a parliamentarian said.

“[US President Donald] Trump is an unpredictable person and an unprofessional politician … There is no guarantee about [his commitment after any] new negotiations,” Hadi Shoushtari, a member of Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, said in a recent talk with ICANA.

Iran conducted negotiations with the US and other world powers on its nuclear program for about two years, which eventually led to an agreement in 2015.

Trump ditched it unilaterally last May, seeking a new deal that would cover a range of other Iranian activities. He has made repeated overtures for new talks, but Iran has rejected them.

Shoushtari said the proposal would serve Trump’s own agenda but would not be beneficial for Iran.

“Withdrawing from international treaties is part of Trump’s approach toward foreign policy,” he said, implying that he is not a reliable negotiator.
