    Snapshot of Iran's Nomadic Economy

    The findings of the recent National Population and Housing Census show Iran’s nomad population is 1,186,830, of which 51.3% are men and the rest women.

    Sixty-three percent of people above six years are literate.

    The literacy rate for men is 70.9% and for women is 54.8%.

    Out of 961,377 nomads of ages above 10, about 74.2% or 713,425 are economically active. About 28% of the country’s pasture, 30% of the livestock and 4% of heavy livestock are at the disposal of nomads.

    They produce 25% or 190,000 tons of country’s red meat, the Statistical Center of Iran reported.
