Smarter Ways to Enhance Tehran Traffic Surveillance

As part of measures introduced by the Tehran Municipality to augment traffic surveillance, roads will be monitored by advanced cameras to detect traffic violations.

According to Mohsen Pour Seyed Aqaei, managing director of Transportation and Traffic Organization of Tehran Municipality, hundreds of new traffic cameras will monitor violations including cars crossing speed limits and lacking technical inspection stickers, news website Asr-e Khodro reported.

"To detect vehicles lacking technical inspection labels, 700 plus advanced cameras have been installed in central Tehran -- an area with the heaviest traffic."

Aqaei said a fine of 500,000 rials ($3.6) awaits cars lacking technical inspection stickers.

Furthermore, 120 new cameras are due to be installed inside the restricted zones to monitor prohibited entries.

The restricted areas, also referred to as Low Emission Zone, is an 80 square kilometer area in central Tehran in which only public transport vehicles and those with special permits can enter during working hours.

In a bid to further ease the traffic congestion and curb air pollution, cars are allowed to enter other designated areas on alternate days depending on the odd and even number plates.

New surveillance cameras will soon be installed on police cars, enabling them to find illegal entries to the restricted zones through a smart system, Aqaei added.

The new cameras will automatically record offenses such as speaking on mobile phones, not wearing a seatbelt, eating and drinking behind the wheel, in addition to double parking and stopping under no-stop signs.

Traffic jams and air pollution have long been enveloping the metropolis forcing authorities to come up with new measures to alleviate the scourge and improve the quality of living in the sprawling capital of 12 million people.
