As part of an initiative launched in 2016 to increase traffic surveillance, more than 1,300 new traffic cameras have been installed on major inter-city roadways.
According to Traffic Police Chief General Taqi Mehri, the first phase of the project calls for installing 1,800 smart cameras over two years to monitor traffic flow on main roads across the country, Asr-e Khodro news website reported.
He says so far 1,300 cameras have been installed and the rest will be in place in the coming months.
Pointing to the necessity of efficient monitoring of traffic rules in overcrowded capital, he said, “Cameras installed on Tehran’s main roads need to get refined and updated to operate better.”
Through the process traffic cameras in Tehran are to be upgraded to become compatible with higher standards, providing more accurate and reliable information.
Currently, the cameras are used to monitor the illegal entry of motorists into restricted zones in the central parts of the capital and other traffic violations.
Tehran's restricted area also referred to as Low Emission Zone, is a 80 square kilometer-area in central Tehran bearing the heaviest traffic load, where only taxis and a few other exemptions are permitted to enter during working hours.
In a bid to ease the traffic jams and curb air pollution cars are allowed to enter other designated areas on alternate days depending on the odd and even number of their number plate.
