Iran’s Consumer Market Valued at $177b Last Year

Iran's consumer market was worth 7,180 trillion rials ($177.4 billion) in the fiscal 2017-18, according to a report by Tehran Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture using figures released by the Statistical Center of Iran.

Food and tobacco with 1,790 trillion rials ($44.3 billion) accounted for 25% of the domestic consumer market.

The report shows “Flour, Noodles, Grains, Bread and Their Products” had the largest share in food consumer market with 410 trillion rials ($10.1 billion), followed by “Meat” with 360 trillion rials ($9 billion).

The “Fruits and Vegetables” market was worth 300 trillion rials ($7.4 billion), “Milk and its Products Plus Eggs” 190 trillion rials ($4.8 billion), as “Beverages, Readymade Foods and Tobacco” was valued at 150 trillion rials ($3.8 billion).

The market value of “Sugar Cubes, Sugar, Sweets, Tea, Coffee and Cocoa” was put at 140 trillion rials ($3.5 billion), “Nuts and Pulses” at 120 trillion rials ($3 billion), “Vegetable Oils and Fats” at 60 trillion rials ($1.4 billion) and “Spices, Condiments and Other Ingredients” at 50 trillion rials ($1.3 billion). 

The non-food consumer market was worth 5,380 trillion rials ($133.1 billion). The “Housing” group had the largest share in the non-food consumer market with 2,220 trillion rials ($54.8 billion) accounting for over 41% of the total non-food consumer market, followed by “Transportation and Communications”, the second largest group in non-food consumer market, worth 890 trillion rials ($22 billion), accounted for 16% of the non-food consumer market.

The “Health and Treatment” group was worth 770 trillion rials ($19 billion), “Miscellaneous Goods and Services” 710 trillion rials ($17.5 billion), “Clothing and Shoes” 300 trillion rials ($7.3 billion), “Home Appliances, Furniture, Households’ Services” 300 trillion rials ($7.3 billion) and “Leisure Activities, Entertainments and Cultural Services” amounted to 210 trillion rials ($5.2 billion). 

The report also shows urban areas accounted for about 6,070 trillion rials ($150 billion) while rural areas made up around 1,100 trillion rials ($27.1 billion) of the value of Iran's consumer market.

Among provinces, Tehran accounted for 28% of the total value of the country’s consumer market with 2,000 trillion rials ($49 billion). Khorasan Razavi and Isfahan came in a distant second and third with 530 trillion rials ($13 billion) and 500 trillion rials ($12 billion) respectively after Tehran in terms of the value of their consumer markets. 

The Iranian rial in this report was converted into US dollar at the average market exchange rate in fiscal 2017-18, 40,453 rials per dollar.
