Some 1.8 million tons of oranges were produced in Iran during the last Iranian year (March 2017-18), more than 16,700 tons of which were exported.

The announcement was made by Tehran Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture citing data released by the Statistical Center of Iran and the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration.

Iraq, Turkmenistan and Qatar with 13,800 tons, 899 tons and 755 tons of purchases respectively were Iran’s top three export destinations for the product over the period.

Oranges were cultivated on over 15,200 hectares of orchards across the country last year with the provinces of Mazandaran in the north, Kerman in the southeast and Fars in the southwest being the biggest producers of the fruit.

Some 16,000 tons of the citrus fruit were also imported into Iran from Turkey and Egypt during the period, according to the report.
