France Urged to Help Restrain Unilateralism

President Hassan Rouhani called for efforts to promote cooperation with France on regional and international issues and in countering the unilateral policies of certain countries.

In a message to his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron on Saturday, Rouhani congratulated France’s government and nation on the Bastille Day, the national day of France which is celebrated on July 14.

“I hope that we witness further development … in confronting unilateralism practiced by some countries and fostering multilateralism through collaboration,” he said, Tasnim News Agency reported.

The president did not name any country. But it is believed that he was referring to the United States under the watch of Donald Trump whose polices on a wide range of areas are seen as a real threat to global peace and stability and to international trade.

France is currently engaged in talks over the future of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal which has been imperiled after the US pulled out in early May.

The other signatories of the deal–namely France, Germany, Britain, China and Russia–are trying to salvage the agreement now in dire straits.

In the message to Macron, the president expressed the hope that via mutual cooperation and drawing on common views and existing capacities the two nations would strengthen relations at the bilateral, regional and international levels.

Bastille Day is a French national holiday, which marks the storming of the Bastille in the 1700s and the beginning of republican democracy and the end of tyrannical rule.
