Officials of Ardebil have intentions to launch at least five ski resorts across the northwestern province in a bid to boost tourist arrivals in winter months.
"Mountainous terrains in Ardebil Province are suitable for use as ski areas. The project is aimed at promoting winter tourism," Nader Fallahi, head of the provincial office of Iran's Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization, said on Saturday, CHTN reported.
He called for increased participation on the part of academic institutions in tourism projects, saying, "We expect more support and contribution from administrative bodies and academic institutions so we could develop a more innovative approach to winter tourism."
For that purpose, Fallahi stressed that it is essential to build a link between universities and the tourism industry.
Tourism development requires active cooperation from other sectors too, he noted.
Crucial Infrastructure
"Transport infrastructures are key to provincial tourism plans. Thankfully, Ardebil's governor general has pledged to complete the province's rail project in three years."
Building an extension to the national rail network, which would cover five provinces including Ardebil, is high on the government's agenda.
Fallahi said potential private contractors are welcome to take over winter tourism projects.
"The private sector is offered loans at low interest rates and the initial approval for the projects will be granted in no longer than one week," he said. ICHHTO has been pushing through a proposal for a several-day winter holiday to boost tourism in the cold season.
"Ardebil Province is an active supporter of the proposal so the potential of the vacation period could be exploited to bolster winter tourism," Fallahi said. He added that his organization has been in consultation with the sport and youth organization to organize winter sport events as well.
