Diplomacy Can Help Restore Stability to Yemen, Syria

A senior official on Friday reiterated Iran's stance that the situation in war-torn Yemen and Syria should be resolved diplomatically without foreign interference.

"From the outset Iran emphasized that a political solution should be found to the crises in Syria and Yemen and has maintained that the military intervention by the United States and its allies undermines the stability and security in the region," said Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, an advisor to the Majlis speaker.

He made the remarks in a meeting with Pascale Baeriswyl, state secretary at the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, in Tehran in reference to a coalition of Arab forces led by Saudi Arabia and supported by the US, which launched a military intervention in Yemen in 2015.

      West's Silence

Amir-Abdollahian also criticized the West's silence on "systematic human rights violations" in Yemen and Bahrain, saying that it only worsens the humanitarian crisis gripping the Middle East, Tansim News Agency reported.

Israeli provocation and adventurism, which help breed terrorism, is another destabilizing factor in this volatile region, he added.

      Positive Relations

He described the relationship between Tehran and Bern as "positive", adding that Iran is waiting to see how Europe will respond to Washington's unilateral withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear agreement.

The Swiss official said her country appreciates Iran's efforts in combating terrorism in Syria and Iraq and promoting regional peace and security.

Switzerland has sent humanitarian aid to Yemen, Baeriswyl said, expressing the hope that the crisis could be defused through dialogue.

In addition, she said Europe wants Iran to remain in the nuclear agreement despite the US departure and believes that a solution can be found if negotiations over saving the deal continue.

      Official Visit

President Hassan Rouhani is scheduled to visit Switzerland next month and would attend meetings on July 2 and 3 with four Swiss cabinet members, including President Alain Berset, to explore how relations can deepen in light of the US sanctions, according to the Swiss government.

Switzerland, which is not a member of the European Union, represents the interests of the United States and Saudi Arabia in Iran and of Iran in Saudi Arabia.

Officials and business executives will accompany Rouhani on the trip, during which several cultural, economic and political agreements are to  be signed, domestic media reported.
