A stage reading of the Persian translation of the play “Who Is Afraid of Virginia Woolf” written by American playwright Edward Albee (1928-2016) has been set for June 11 at Mashayekhi Theater House in Tehran.
Albee’s play was translated into Persian by Siamak Golshiri in 2005. In three acts, the piece navigates the complexities of the marriage of a middle-aged couple, Martha and George. Late one evening, after a university party, they receive an unwitting younger couple, Nick and Honey, as guests, and draw them into their bitter and frustrated relationship.
The title is a pun on the song “Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?” from Walt Disney’s “Three Little Pigs” (1933), substituting for the name of the celebrated English author Virginia Woolf. Martha and George repeatedly sing this version of the song throughout the play.
A film adaptation with a namesake title was released in 1966, written by Ernest Lehman, directed by Mike Nichols, and starring Richard Burton, Elizabeth Taylor, George Segal and Sandy Dennis.
At the stage reading, the readers will be Rouhollah Amini, Sara Rostami, Ehsan Forouzesh, Hanieh Mehri and Marjan Yadegari, Tiwall.com reported.
The theater is located at No. 1478, northwestern side of Valiasr Crossroad, Enqelab Avenue.
