Nearly 26% of addicts are using methamphetamines (especially crystal meth) which have adverse effect on physical and mental health, said Homayoun Hashemi, head of the State Welfare Organization (SWO).
Industrial drugs are more harmful than traditional ones, and their use is showing an increasing trend in the country, ISNA quoted him as saying.
When taken, meth and crystal meth create a false sense of well-being and energy, and so a person “will tend to push his body faster and further than it is meant to go.” Thus, the drug users may experience a severe ‘crash’ or physical and mental breakdown after the effect of the drugs wear off.
Because continued use of the drug reduces natural appetite for food, users can experience extreme weight loss. Negative effects can also include disturbed sleep patterns, hyperactivity, nausea and delusions of power besides increased aggressiveness and irritability. Addiction to such drugs with their devastating social and cultural consequences has directly affected 5 million people in the country, Hashemi said.
