SNSC Chief Renews Support for Iraq

Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani congratulated the Iraqis on holding the first parliamentary elections after degrading the self-styled Islamic State terror group, and said Iran will continue to back the neighboring country and help address its problems.

“The success in holding parliamentary elections in a safe and peaceful environment, realized through the significant role of the clergy and the outstanding participation of the people, is indeed another indication of the military and security prowess of the government, political maturity of the nation, and the result of the sacrifices of your martyrs,” Shamkhani wrote in a message, as reported by ISNA.

He expressed good wishes for the Arab nation and said better times lie ahead for the Iraqi nation via solidarity between the people, the state, army and the resistance front.

Iran’s Embassy in Baghdad also released a statement on the historic vote and called for closer bonds between the two neighbors.

The people of Iraq voted on Saturday in the general elections in which voter turnout was reported at 45%.
