Iran's permanent representative to the United Nations reaffirmed his country’s longstanding solidarity with the Palestinian people, saying the Israeli occupation of Palestine is at the core of all conflicts in the Middle East.
In a statement at the Security Council Open Debate on “Situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian Question” on Thursday, Gholamali Khoshroo condemned the fresh crimes and atrocities of the Zionist regime in Gaza Strip, Mehr News Agency reported.
He pointed to the continuation of aggressive and expansionist policies of the Zionist regime in the region and added, “the political show of US and Zionist regime cannot cover the aggressive policies of this regime toward its neighbors, so that the Zionist regime is the main source of threats jeopardizing peace and security in the region to a great extent”.
Khoshroo called Israel a “rogue regime” and said, “recent crimes committed by the Zionist regime in Gaza Strip caused the death and injury of many Palestinian people”.
"Countries that support Israel in waging war against the oppressed people of Palestine should be held accountable for their heinous acts," he said.
Protests along the Gaza border since March 30 have led to clashes with Israeli forces who have killed dozens of Palestinians and injured hundreds of others.
The rally, dubbed the "Great March of Return," will last until May 15, which coincides with the 70th anniversary of Nakba Day (Day of Catastrophe), which marks the creation of Israel.
Khoshroo strongly condemned the decision taken by the United States to declare Beit-ul-Moqaddas as the capital of Israel and relocate its embassy to this holy land, saying “such measures are clear violation of international laws and regulations”.
He called on the United Nations Security Council to take urgent measures in this respect, otherwise it will lead to the deterioration of the situation in the Middle East.
Iran’s UN envoy noted that if the UN Security Council is serious about establishing peace and security in the Middle East, it should take immediate action against the warmongering policies of Israel in the region.
Expressing Iran's strong support for the oppressed people of Palestine, Khoshroo said, “Iran will spare no efforts in this respect to back the inalienable and legal right of Palestinian nation as an independent country.”
