President Pledges Support for Syria Reconstruction Effort

President Hassan Rouhani said Iran is ready to help Syria in its reconstruction  effort.

"Just as [Iran] stood by the Syrian people in their fight against terrorism, the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran is ready to employ all in its power for Syria's reconstruction." Rouhani said in a message to his Syrian counterpart Bashar al-Assad on Saturday, ISNA reported.

He congratulated the Syrian president on the occasion of Evacuation Day, Syria's national day commemorating the evacuation of the last French soldier, the country's proclamation of independence as well as the end of the French mandate in Syria on April 17, 1946.

Rouhani said the Syrian people had made sacrifices in the past to gain independence and drive hostile powers out of their country.

The Syrians are now making tireless efforts to thwart enemies' plots, save their country from terrorists and gain new victories, he said.

The Iranian president noted that Iran would continue to help the Syrian government and people until the restoration of security and stability in the war-torn Arab country.

Rouhani expressed hope that a final victory would be achieved soon in the campaign against terrorists in Syria.

Syria has seen seven years of death and destruction during the bloody conflict. What started as protests against the government in Damascus turned into a bloody civil war that later brought terrorist groups and their backers into the country. The terrorists were able to push back the Syrian Army in many cities and wreaked havoc in the process.

The course of the war, however, changed when Russia and Iran, at the request of the Syrian government, intervened to help the country defend the rebels and the Islamic State terrorists and the mercenaries.
