PTA With Turkey Not in Iran’s Interests

Iran’s economic interests have not been incorporated in its preferential trade agreement with Turkey and this has had consequences for the Iranian economy, the chairman of Iran Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture said.

“The PTA was signed without the consultation of economic experts and businesspeople. ICCIMA has reviewed the effects of the agreement on Iran-Turkey trade for the past 10 months, the results of which will be published in the next two weeks,” Gholamreza Shafei was also quoted as saying by ICCIMA’s news portal.

Shafei added that the PTA has resulted in a trade deficit that favors Turkey.

“Iran’s automotive and textile sectors have particularly been damaged by this bilateral agreement,” he said.

The PTA between Iran and Turkey was signed in January 2014 and took effect a year later.
