Snow, Fog Shut Dizin Ski Resort

Dizin Ski Resort which did not have enough snow coverage in winter, now is closed due to heavy snow that fell on Sunday night.

Managers of the resort estimated that 70cm of snow was dumped on the previous layers up until Monday morning, IRNA reported.

Once in need of snow cannons in winter, Dizin now has too much of snow that has shut it down during a season considered as the final working days in spring.

The precipitation has blanketed the popular site with snow as well as fog that led to its closure as of Monday until further notice.

The resort hosted the Asian Para Skiing and Skiing Cup in February. At the time, Ali Omran-Solaqani, head of Alborz Ski Federation, had expressed serious concern surrounding the cancelling of the games due to poor precipitation.

Dizin International Ski Resort, 70km northeast of Karaj City in Alborz Province, hosts national and international ski competitions.

It is the first ski resort in Iran which is certified by the World Ski Federation for upholding enough standards to host international events. Altitude of the piste is 3,600 meters above sea level and 2,650 meters at the lowest point.

Located in the Alborz Mountain Range, 123km north of Tehran (from Chalus Road), the piste is one of the main ski resorts in the Middle East.

It attracts ski lovers from across the country, namely Alborz, Tehran and Mazandaran provinces along with foreign tourists interested in winter sports.

Dizin usually opens in the Persian month of Aban (October23-November 21) but when there is no snow, the opening is postponed to the last month of fall, Azar (November 22-December 21).
