Despondent, Distressed Palestinians Seek Int’l Help

Inaction by Arab leaders against the ongoing Israeli campaign of death and destruction in Gaza has left the Palestinians aggravated leading them to look for support from international authorities, said an editorial published by IRNA on Monday.

"The deathly silence of the Arab League toward the Zionist war crimes signals a green light from corrupt Arab states to the occupying regime, allowing it to use extreme violence against Palestinians with impunity, without worrying about the consequences," the article said.

"The fact that Palestinians have appealed to international authorities instead of reactionary Arab [leaders] and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, clearly shows their total disappointment with the Arabs."

At least 30 Palestinians have been shot dead by Israeli security forces since the start of the new protests on March 30, when tens of thousands converged on the joint border with Israel, demanding the right of return for Palestinian refugees.

Live ammunition, rubber-coated steel bullet and tear gas fired at the rallies by Israeli soldiers wounding over 1,400 protestors.

The demonstrations are part of a planned, weeks-long sit-in dubbed the Great March of Return.

Its main message is to call for the right of return for Palestinian refugees who were driven from their homes in the territories taken over forcibly by Israel during the 1948 war, known to Arabs as the Nakba.

In a statement last week, Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas called on the UN, Arab League and the European Union to take immediate action to stop the Israeli brutality against Palestinians.

“We condemn Israel’s brutality and deliberate killing of innocent people who took part in a peaceful march to defend their right to life, liberty and dignity,” he said in a statement, carried by Turkey's Anadolu news agency.

He called on the UN Security Council to provide international protection to the "defenseless people in the face of the [Israeli] occupation army, which uses killing and repression to silence the voice of Palestinians”.

The United Nations has urged all parties to refrain from any act that could lead to further violence or place civilians in harm’s way.
