President Hassan Rouhani is due to leave Tehran for Ankara today for the second round of talks with Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdogan, his Russian and Turkish counterparts respectively, on the latest developments in Syria.
Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and some other members of Rouhani’s Cabinet will accompany him on the trip, IRNA reported.
The president is also scheduled to hold separate discussions with his counterparts on the sidelines of the trilateral meeting.
Moscow, Tehran and Ankara are guarantors of the Syria peace process, an initiative brokered in the Kazakh capital Astana to find a peaceful settlement to the Syria war.
Iran’s military advisers backed by Russia’s air power have intervened in the Syria conflict to back President Bashar al-Assad in his fight against militant groups that rely on support from western powers and their regional allies, including Turkey, to dislodge Assad. The first round of presidential talks was convened in the Black Sea resort of Sochi in November 2017.
