In line with policies to renovate outdated facilities in oil and gas companies to boost production, National Iranian South Oil Company has reconditioned dilapidated equipment in Masjed Soleyman Oil and Gas Producing Company, NISOC's managing director said.
"The new installations, which have been designed with the help of domestic expertise, comply with international standards," Bijan Alipour was also quoted as saying by NIOC's news portal on Saturday.
Giving a breakdown on the venture, the official added that the new facilities include oil desalting units as well as natural gas injection installations in a number of oilfields, namely Haftkel, Naft Sefid, Lab-Sefid, Kaboud, Masjed Soleyman and Nar.
"Masjed Soleyman Company accounts for 6% of the country's total oil production," he said.
Pointing to the oilfield, which is the oldest in the Middle East, the official said 17.5% of the field's reserves have been extracted so far. The field is located in southern Iran, with two carbonate reservoirs, Asmari reservoir on the top and Bangestan at the bottom.
The field is estimated to contain 6.5 billion barrels of oil. So far, 367 wells were drilled in the field, of which only 16 are currently operational.
"Gas injection into Haftkel Oilfield is aimed at increasing the field's production," he added.
Gas injection or miscible flooding, is presently the most commonly used approach in enhanced oil recovery by introducing miscible gases into the reservoir. A miscible displacement process maintains reservoir pressure and improves oil displacement because the interfacial tension between oil and water is reduced.
