Linguist and researcher Hassan Anvari will be honored in a ceremony on the 139th birth anniversary of the celebrated Persian linguist Ali Akbar Dehkhoda at the International Centre for Persian Studies in Tehran on Monday.
Anvari, 84, who taught Persian literature at Kharazmi University in Tehran, is an authority in his field and has devoted a great part of his life doing research in Persian literature.
He is one of the authors of Dehkhoda Dictionary Encyclopedia, which is the largest comprehensive Persian encyclopedia ever published, comprising 16 volumes and over 27,000 pages with more than 340,000 entries.
According to the Dehkhoda Institute website, Icps.ut.ac.ir, the event will be attended by distinguished university professor and researcher of Persian literature Mohammadreza Bateni, and board member of Kharazmi University Mahmoud Abedi among other scholars.
Dehkhoda (1879-1956) studied political science in University of Tehran. He was interested in Persian literature as well as other languages and excelled in French and Arabic. He served as dean of the department of political science in the same university and later as head of the department of law.
His literary and commentary works began with his collaboration with the popular Persian weekly ‘Sur-Esrafil’ founded by Mirza Jahangir Khan Shirazi, known as Sur-Esrafil, and Qasem Khan Tabrizi. There, Dehkhoda wrote a satirical political column titled ‘Charand-o-Parand’ under the nickname Dakho.
His distinguished work is the Dehkhoda Dictionary Encyclopedia -- the result of 40 years of hard work. Thousands of Turkish, Arabic, Indian, German, French, English and Russian words used in the Persian language can be found in this comprehensive dictionary. Persian grammar is also explained in full in the reference book.
