Iran’s Ambassador to the United Nations Gholamali Khoshroo criticized some countries that use sanctions as a weapon against other nations, adding that such an approach “challenges international laws and is an infringement of human rights.”
“Unfortunately, it seems that these actions all originate from one country which has seemingly become addicted to imposing sanctions,” Khoshroo said in an apparent reference to the US, ISNA reported on Wednesday.
Speaking at a UN Charter committee session, the Iranian permanent representative to the world body said even UN-backed sanctions “should be used as a last resort” in the event that there is a real threat to global peace.
He said such measures should not be taken based on misinformation or half-baked ideas.
“Those UN-backed sanctions that are driven based on politically-motivated agenda or have been decided due to pressure from permanent members of the UN Security Council are in fact illegal and illegitimate.”
The US mission has tried to convince the UN to impose penalties on Iran on the charge that it supplied missiles to Yemeni Houthis, something Tehran has flatly denied.
