Good Potential for Improving Economic Ties With Russia

A lawmaker said in view of the meetings of a joint parliamentary working group of Iran and Russia, there is good potential for improvement of economic cooperation between the two countries.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the parliament's open session on Wednesday, the head of Iran-Russia Parliamentary Friendship Group, Ramezanali Sobhanifar, also pointed to the influential role of parliaments in expanding relations and said adopting laws to facilitate bilateral relations through parliamentary friendship could be effective, ICANA reported.

Referring to recent parliamentary meetings between the two sides, Sobhanifar said, "Many problems have been resolved. Currently Iran and Russia are in a favorable situation regarding regional and political issues and their power has been recognized in the world."

Over the past few years, Iran and Russia have enjoyed a rise in constructive political and economic relations.

The removal of obstacles to banking transactions and expansion of financial cooperation in the wake of the 2015 nuclear deal has remarkably boosted bilateral trade.

"The volume of trade between the two countries witnessed a 70% growth last year," Iran's economy minister said in a meeting with Russian minister of energy in November.

Last month, Iran opened its first House of Commerce in Astrakhan Oblast in the South of Russia. The house offers a new opportunity to Russian entrepreneurs to discuss projects and contracts with their Iranian counterparts.

Discussions are underway between Iranian and Russian businesspeople to establish a Russian house of commerce in Iran.

      Political Front

In a recent meeting between Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev and Iranian First Vice President Es'haq Jahangiri, the two sides envisioned a bright future for Iran-Russia ties with the Russian official saying bonds of friendship are being strengthened through mutually beneficial cooperation in several areas. The anti-terror collaboration between Iran and Russia is an example of effective cooperation.  The two sides joined forces in support of the Syrian government in its anti-terror fight and eventually drove away the self-styled Islamic State terrorist group and liberated Syrian cities.

Over the past four years, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin have sat down for a dozen of meetings, which indicate the two nations have established a solid platform for dialogue.
